Ok, call this a "senior moment" or just a plain "DUH!" deal, but ... thought I'd share an issue (as well as the resolution of the problem) I've recently been struggling with ...

Server: FC6 running LAMP (Apache 2.x, MySQL within Moodle paratmeters, same with PHP).

Symptoms:  Version 1.6 working just fine.  Versions 1.7 and 1.8 doing crazy things!  In courses, the setting pick list for maximum size of uploads allowed showing "32bytes" ... NOT 32 MB as in php config.  Attempts at editing anything or turning on editing logged on as Admin or Teacher of a course, kept throwing me back to login again! (Hmmmm - kinda like that annoying "permissions" deal with a certain flavor of OS!).

Reaction: scratching head led to cursing and eventually drastic measures of un-install, re-install (something I've NEVER had to do with a LAMP stack app!).
Of course there was the usual searching of resources for problems and their resolutions.

Finally saw something that changed my trouble-shooting thinking processes (at this point, they weren't doing too well anyway!).

The "fix" had to do with cookies and browser cache!  DUH!  In the Moodle config there is a setting for a "prefix" to cookies.  Normally one doesn't need to enter anything, however, with 3 different versions of Moodle IT IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY!  So, entering "m17" prefix  for cookies in the Moodle 1.7 and "m18" prefix for the cookies in Moodle 1.8, then removing all cookies for the server in question, FIXED! ;)

Why would you want to know this?  Well, if you start to investigate upgrading a Moodle and want to find out of the newer version is worth it, you might do as I have done and install the newer version on the same server as your production server.

So there ya have it ... this Moodle Tip brought to you by someone who should be playing a lot more GOLF! ;)
