Being a "web head" from waaaay back, it's always been an interest when
new browser versions are released - and an "adventure". When beginning
to work with Joomla CMS ran into a situation with IE which wouldn't
render certain templates correctly. The fix was simple enough, but
involved placing a line in the default page with instructions for IE
browsers only. The line was for meta data and one had to type: "quirks
mode please". At first glance, one thinks that's got to be a joke,
but after trying it (simple enough to reverse) it did indeed work!
Even took out the word "please" once to see what happened ... uhhh,
nope, you had to ask politely or it would not work ... go figure! (most
of you readers who frequent this area probably know how much restraint
the author is exercising here ... no "soap box" and "rant and rave"!) Well, MS is about to release version 8 of IE and as in the past webmasters will/might have to make some "adjustments" to their pages. Found a ZDnet blog article that talks about it so ISD webmasters out there might want to keep this URL reference as well as "tip": URL: http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=619&tag=nl.e539 and this little clip of meta tag: The author of the ZDnet blog has been testing IE8 for some time now and has been investigating which major sites will appear to be broken. Author listed them in a IE 8 Compatibility Hall of Shame:<meta http-equiv=”X-UA-Compatible” content=”IE=EmulateIE7″ /> http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=619&page=2 And listed ... Dell Support, SlashDot, and Google Analytics to name a few! Might also be aware of this resource: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/cc405106.aspx which reportedly has a wizard for addressing the issue. NOTE: if you use IE8 and this sites template "breaks", please let me know! :) Yours, in the "spirit of sharing" and keeping web pages viewable/useable!, Ken
