Ok, this might be one of those "been there, done that" things, but I occassionally like to re-visit certain technologies to see if things have changed.
Criteria: Let's assume our Example ISD requires Enterprise editions. Reasoning: ISD wants "the best" and no expansion issues for future use.
Please note: the author is NOT an expert at MS licensing. "MSL Certification" ought to be required by ALL ISD Technology Directors, IMHO! Colleges/Universities should teach this as a separate course. Also note, this investigation doesn't even begin to address engineering - the hardware of the server itself. This is just comparing software cost!
Microsoft Content Management Server
Resource from http://www.microsoft.com/cmserver/howtobuy/default.mspx
MSCMS Enterprise - $24,999.00 per processor or MSCMS Standard - $6,999.00 per processor
Additional Required software: 1. Windows Server 2003, or 2000, or 2000 Advanced Server Pricing for WS2003 Enterprise Edition: $3,999 which includes 25 Cals
2. SQL Server 2000 (SP3) Enterprise Edition $23,911 $13,969 with 25 CALs $8,487 per Server $162 per CAL (retail - reseller pricing may vary)
So an Enterprise Edition of everything: 25,000.00 4,000.00 23,000.00 ------------- 52,000.00
But wait, there's more. From the page referenced above: "Locate pricing information for the different types of licenses available for Microsoft Content Management Server 2002. Use the related links on this page to find information on how to obtain production licenses, development licenses, application service provider (ASP) licenses, independent software vendor (ISV) licenses, and trial software."
A development license? Is that required? 3,000.00
I stopped at this point!!!!! Top of the line 52,000.00 + 3,000.00? + ASP? + ISV!?
Open Source Alternative
Operating System - Internet Server setup (LAMP Stack) - $0.00 (Fedora Core 4 or other OpenSource Linux distribution)
Joomla or Mambo CMS - $0.00
WINNER: OpenSource box with Joomla or Mambo
Now let's talk "features". http://www.cmsmatrix.org/matrix/ and compare: Joomla, Mambo, and Microsoft CMS
Pay special attention to the "Built-In Applications" section of your comparison.
WINNER: OpenSource box with Joomla or Mambo
Now you can spend all you want on the engineering of the server - faster processor, larger hard drive, etc.!
